This will help thousands of PhD holders affected by the new UGC guideline of 2009 which made NET and PhD a minimum eligibility criteria for applying for the post of assistant professor
The UGC will be granting certain relaxations to PhD holders registered before 2009. This move will provide relief to the many candidates applying for teaching jobs in universities across India. The UGC has decided to request the HRD Ministry to issue a notification in this regard after an examination of the matter at the full commission meeting on Monday. The relaxation will help in recognizing the PhDs on par with those done after 2009. PhD holders were affected by the new UGC guideline in 2009, which had made NET and PhD a minimum eligibility criteria for applying for assistant professor in colleges and universities.
The UGC had asked for the relaxation last year in May but the HRD ministry did not follow up on the proposal according to a commission member. The relaxation will give Ph.D holders registered before 2009 priority while offering jobs. Procedures like course work, external assessment and entrance test to recognise a Ph.D have been laid down in the guidelines.
