PhD research period to be treated as “teaching experience”: UGC

The move aims to tackle shortage of teachers in higher educational institutions

In a circular issued to all universities the Universities Grants Commission (UGC) has asked the institutions to treat the PhD research period as teaching experience. The circular was sent to all the universities on 1 March 2016.

The UGC letter stated, “"the period of active service spent on pursuing Research Degree i.e. for acquiring Ph.D degree simultaneously, without taking any kind of leave, may be counted as teaching experience for the purpose of direct recruitment/ promotion to the post of Associate Professor and above."

The move by UGC appears to be aimed at resolving the problem of shortage of teachers in higher educational institutions. The universities require 2-3 years of teaching experience as eligibility criteria for appointments to faculty positions.
