In the wake of an announcement by Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) to expel 10 students on account of poor academic performance, the union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has asked the elite institution to reconsider expelling the students.
The students, all of whom belong to disadvantaged sections of society, could only score a cumulative grade point average of less than 5. According to the regulations any student scoring below 5 is expelled.
Last year 72 students had been expelled for the same reason. Subsequently the students were asked to resume classes but with conditions set by the administration.
The fate of the 10 students will be decided by the senate on 20 August 2016. An official from MHRD stated that though MHRD has requested IIT Roorkee to re admit the students, the decision ultimately rests with the institute. “The ministry has asked the institute to reconsider its decision. The matter will be presented before the senate that will take a final call,” he said.
