The MoU calls for research into green technology and “advanced materials technology”
Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras) and Tata Steel have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of the Tata Steel Advanced Materials Research Center which will focus on research into green technology and the development of lightweight technology and materials.
After inking the agreement Anand Sen, President, Total Quality Management and Steel Business, Tata Steel stated that the proposed centre will harness technological expertise from both Tata Steel and IIT Madras to develop innovative applications. He added that the centre will go on to become a hub for advanced materials technology and will spur the development of new technology.
Tata Steel has also inked a similar agreement with Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, however that project focuses on a different area.
A press release stated that over the last few years research labs have developed new materials called “advanced materials” which possess different physical and chemical properties. These materials can be used for applications where the use of conventional materials is impractical and efficient.
Professor Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras stated the IIT Madras can provide the faculty, students and equipment that will help achieve a decisive breakthrough in the use of the new materials.
