The cloud based UMS will help bring more transparency to the functioning of the varsities
The University Grants Commission (UGC) is now planning to bring all central universities under the ambit of a central e-governance system. Sources stated that the move seeks to make the functioning of the universities more transparent. The cloud based University Management System (UMS) an initiative by UGC that will connect all central universities will help streamline and simplify procedures such as admissions and will help monitor academics, administration and matters related to finance.
The apex regulatory body has also constituted a panel comprising three vice chancellors of central universities of Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and Bihar. The panel will oversee the implementation of UMS besides finding ways to bring about complete wifi connectivity in all central universities.
"The committee has been asked to give bi-monthly report on the progress and fix a timeline for implementation of the plan,” stated an official. The committee will be responsible for floating a tender and finding a suitable vendor for bringing the UMS to the university campuses.
"It will prepare the tender documents, finalise the tender documents, call for tenders, make comparative statement, negotiate with companies/vendors and place orders on behalf of Central Universities,” the official added.
The three member panel will also be responsible for coordinating with all the central universities for the implementation of the UMS.
