While most universities routinely uploaded all dissertations, UGC has now made it mandatory
The University Grants Commission UGC) has now made it mandatory for all higher education institutions to upload MPHIL and PhD dissertations so that they may be accessible at the Information and Library Network Centre (INFLIBNET).
“Following the successful completion of the evaluation process and before the announcement of the award of the MPhil/PhD degree(s), the institution concerned shall submit an electronic copy of the MPhil dissertation/PhD thesis to the INFLIBNET, for hosting the same so as to make it accessible to all Institutions or colleges,” a release from the higher education regulator read. UGC released the new regulations in recently issued communiqué.
Most universities across the nation would routinely upload the dissertations, but the UGC has now made it mandatory for them to do so.
The INFLIBNET an autonomous inter-university set up was established by UGC in 1991 at the Gujarat University campus in Gandhinagar. The initiative aims to provide make knowledge accessible to all through the use of the internet.
Speaking on the new rule a UGC official stated, “With the mandatory submission of academic works of the research schools, the INFLIBNET would be able to achieve its objectives, which include facilitating academic communication among researchers, faculties and students through the use of the ICT.”
He added that in the future INFLIBNET would connect all institutions in the country, providing a one stop virtual library where the latest knowledge could be stored and available to scholars. He observed that it might also be able to generate revenue.
