Jadavpur University vice chancellor resigns

The demand for his removal had come about as a result of last September’s police action on a sit-in by students

Jadavpur University vice chancellor Abhijit Chakrabarti has resigned on Monday after the students' ongoing demand for his removal led to a weeklong hunger strike. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced the resignation stating "Vice chancellor of Jadavpur University has been asked to step down. He has forwarded his resignation letter".

Mamata Banerjee met the 17 fasting agitators and their parents who also participated in a 12-hour token hunger strike. The demand for Abhijit Chakrabarti's removal had come about as a result of his alleged order for last September’s police action on a sit-in by students demanding an independent investigation into an alleged molestation in August.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee added "I was concerned about the future of the youth and students. No academic activity was happening at JU for four months. I want peaceful environment to prevail in JU. There must be conducive atmosphere for education. Vice chancellor of Jadavpur University has expressed his desire to resign".
