The MCI has created a new amendment that says an MD in biochemistry is not eligible for a DM in Endocrinology

An amendment by the Medical Council of India (MCI) has deemed that degree holders of MD in biochemistry are not eligible for a DM in Endocrinology. This has left many like Dr Chaitanya Yerawar, a MD)in Biochemistry from Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Medical College (BJMC) without an option to pursue the course of their choice. His admission for a Doctorate of Medicine (DM) with super speciality in Endocrinology was cancelled by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER).

He spoke to various media stating I took up Biochemistry with the plan of pursuing Endocrinology as a super-specialty. I had taken admission for MD in 2010. I studied extremely hard for the entrance exam (MHSSET), in which I secured a 5th rank and was selected in Seth GS Medical College in Mumbai on July 24.

On July 30, I got a letter from the DMER stating that my admission has been cancelled on account of the amendment. Moreover, the amendment was done on May 15 but I was not informed about this until July 30.

193 colleges in the country presently offer 481 seats in MD Biochemistry. Biochemistry is a non-clinical medicine branch, and most students on completion aim for super speciality in Endocrinology or Haemotology to re-establish their qualifications in a clinical branch.

Yerawar added Haemotology is not as popular a branch as Endocrinology. Most of us have pursued biochemistry with an ambition of opting for Endocrinology as a super specialty. All the previous batches will have to suffer. Why cant they start applying the amendment for the batches that are yet to join MD in biochemistry? Then students can make an informed decision,.

Dr Hemkant Patil, 30, B J Medical College stated to the media People generally take up Biochemistry to attain eligibility to pursue Endocrinology. I had pursued for the same reason. This trend has been going on since the batch of 2000. They are scrapping it all of a sudden. It is hampering our basic rights to education. Besides, we have studied Endocrinology in our syllabus, like the other eligible branches."

Dr Praveen Shinganre, the director of DMER spoke on this development saying, We are following the instructions of the MCI. The order came in after we printed the brochures. Hence, the brochures mention that MD (Biochemistry) students are eligible for DM (Endocrinology).
