Six MoUs in sectors including education, environment, gas and space science, between India and the US have been approved by the cabinet. The MoUs are to be signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the United States. Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad stated to the press "The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister today gave its approval to the signing a Joint Declaration between the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) of India and the National Science Foundation ( NSF) of the United States of America to initiate a new programme entitled Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) in Higher Education".
A Joint Declaration of Intent between the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and the US Department of State has also been approved.
The two bodies will cooperate in a higher education online education programme called Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM). The SWAYAM platform server will be based in India and US universities will offer post-graduate academic programmes with certification platform. The new Indo-US Partnership for Online Education (IUPOE) programme will also be expanded to enable the top universities of the US to create and share post-graduate online courses on the Indian "SWAYAM" platform.
