There is a provision for providing 50% subsidy to colleges and universities for procuring computing device like ‘Aakash’


Union Government has suggested various universities and colleges to induct latest PC ‘Aakash’ in their libraries so that they could issue this low cost device to poor students. The aim behind this idea is to popularise and spread the use of ‘Aakash’ among students. If the plan goes ahead well, the individual subsidy to poor students like SC, ST and OBC for buying Aakash tablet, may not be needed.
Minister of State for Human Resource and Development- Dr D. Purandeswari said that there is a provision for providing 50% subsidy to colleges and universities for procuring computing device like ‘Aakash’ as per their requirements. It may be noted here that this low cost tablet PC was recently launched by the union government.
It is based on the Android 2.2 operating system, with a 7-inch touch screen, three hours of battery life and the ability to download Youtube Videos, PDFs’ and educational software like Virtual labs. The government will subsidize the wireless connection for the students.
