12,000 More Students to get Engineering Seats in Karnataka
30 June 2011

The state government had approached the AICTE to bring down the eligibility criteria from 50 to 45 per cent

The AICTE has agreed to reduce the eligibility cut-off for engineering courses in Karnataka’s private colleges from 50 to 45 per cent. Therefore, more than 12,000 students will be able to qualify for admission to BE in the state this year.

The AICTE had revised the qualifying marks for the four-year BE course from 45 to 50 per cent for general-category students and from 40 to 45 per cent for reserved-category students earlier this year. The move was aimed at raising the quality of engineering graduates in the country. Due to this, there were no takers for about 20,000 engineering seats this year. Also, the number of engineering ranks in the state’s Common Entrance Test fell drastically.

Following this, the Karnataka government, approached the AICTE to bring down the eligibility criteria.

The matter is likely to be decided at the AICTE executive council meeting today.
