American Nobel Laureate joins Amrita University

Prof Leland will teach the students of Amrita School of Engineering and School of Biotechnology at Coimbatore


 

Nobel Laureate Leland Harrison (Lee) Hartwell has been appointed as Adjunct Professor at noted Amrita University. He will teach the student of Amrita School of Engineering and School of Biotechnology at Coimbatore, run by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.
Prof Leland, currently Chief Scientist at the Center for Sustainable Health, Arizona State University, has also worked as the Director of Emeritus at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle, Washington, USA.
The Vice-Chancellor of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Dr Venkat Rangan said that this is the first time in the academic history, when a Nobel Laureate has joined as a faculty in any Indian university.
Leland Harrison (Lee) Hartwell has shared the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Paul Nurse and R. Timothy Hunt, for their discovery of Protein molecules that control the division (duplication) of cells.
In addition to the Nobel Prize, Hartwell has received many awards and honors including the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize from Columbia University.
He became a member of National Academy of Science in 1987 and later he joined the faculty of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He was later promoted as president and director of the center.
