Assam, AP, MP and Haryana may get new NIDs

The new National Institutes of Design (NIDs) are expected to become operational in the next five years.


In a move to meet the growing need of designers in Textile industries, Union government has planned to set up four new National Institutes of Design (NIDs) in the country. These institutes may come up in Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. The new NIDs are expected to become operational in the next five years.
The Director of the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad- Pradyumna Vyas said, "We are producing large number of engineers and managers every year for textile industries. In contrast, we hardly produce 1,000 industrial designers to address the growing need to make design competitive."
It may be mentioned here that National Institute of Design (NID) is a prestigious design school of the country. The institute functions as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The main campus of the institute and its post graduate wings are located at Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Besides this, NID's Bangalore campus is functioning as its R&D (Research and Development) unit.
