Assam’s educational institutions will soon have 23 new biotechnology hubs including six for teaching and research.
The new hubs will be supported by the department of biotechnology under the Ministry of Science and Technology as part of a special programme.
Six educational institutions including IIT Guwahati, Gauhati University, Arya Vid
yapeeth College, Cotton College, Pandu College and Handique Girls’ College have been chosen. A sum of Rs 27 lakh has been sanctioned to each of these institutions.
Officials said the broad purpose of the programme was to promote education and research in biotechnology to attract brilliant young students who wish to pursue a career in biological science.
The hubs include a biotechnology laboratory equipped with all equipments, support for site preparation and budget for procuring chemicals.
The department will provide the grant for three years. After the end of this period, it will be given based on the assessment of the institutes by the department of the biotechnology.
