BIT Mesra’s remote sensing and disaster management departments will be merged into the School of Earth Sciences

The Birla Institute of Technology (BIT Mesra), a prominent tech-cradle enjoying deemed university status in Jharkhand, is all set to introduce a new stream of technology—School of Earth Sciences—for students willing to address environmental issues.

Officials said that the new course is the need of hour with ecological problems looming large over the planet.

BIT-Mesra Vice Chancellor Ajoy Chakraborty said that the institute already had a centre of excellence for climatology. “Similarly, we have remote sensing and disaster management departments. We are planning to merge both the departments into the School of Earth Sciences,” he said.

The idea to launch a separate department for earth science was first floated at the BIT-Mesra campus by Shailesh Nayak, Secretary, Department of Earth Sciences, Government of India, during his visit to the campus a couple of years ago.

Chakraborty said the School of Earth Sciences would be ready to admit students from the next academic session.
