Campus Violence Should Stop: Buddhadeb
20 December 2010

Maoists have killed students and teachers in West Bengal in the past few months

Days after a student was killed in clashes at a college in Howrah district, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said Sunday that campus violence is unacceptable and should stop immediately.

"A student lost his life in campus violence. Another student suffered a severe eye injury. These kinds of incidents are totally unacceptable. Campus violence should stop immediately," Bhattacharjee said while addressing a programme in Kolkata.

Student Federation of India (SFI) supporter Swapan Kole died after he was thrashed while filing his nomination for college elections at Andul College in Howrah district Thursday following a clash between the Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad (TMCP) and the SFI, students' wing of the Communist Party of India-Marxist.

In a separate incident Thursday, 10 students were injured in a clash between the two groups outside Asutosh College in south Kolkata.

"In the last few months we a have also witnessed brutal murders of teachers by Maoists. Actually whenever a unholy force tries to rise they resort to violence and destruction," Bhattacharjee said.
