In an initiative to denounce female feticide and encourage single girl child within families, Delhi Technological University (DTU), formerly Delhi College of Engineering, has decided to earmark one seat over and above the sanctioned intake in all its undergraduate engineering programmes, for single girl child in a family.

The Academic Council of the university in its meeting chaired by the Vice Chancellor of DTU took this decosion. It will be applicable on all the 14 B.Tech courses of the university from the academic session starting 2011 and thus, 14 seats will be made available for single girl child. However, the eligibility criteria for admission for female students falling under this category will be the same as for other students and admissions will be granted on the basis of merit. This move will further encourage female students to undertake engineering education, which has traditionally been considered a male bastion.

The Academic Council also approved the introduction of a B.Tech programme in Mathematics and Computing from the next session with an intake of 60 students. "The academic programme in Mathematics and Computing is specially aimed at creating capabilities of higher-end computing and also to strengthen the mathematical base for tomorrow's informatics and computing application. This course is in line with the university's thrust on creating a synergy between science and engineering," said Professor P.B. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, DTU.

An updated and innovative course curriculum for 14 undergraduate and 17 post-graduate courses of the university was also approved during the meeting. The revised curriculum has been prepared at par with the best technological universities in the world including the IITs. The novel features of the curriculum for B.Tech courses includes: Flexibility in the choice of courses; Modules on Information Technology (IT) in all disciplines; Self-study courses from 3rd semester onwards; Two minor projects and major projects; Industrial training after 6th and 7th semester and Industry relevant courses in all disciplines. The ordinance for PhD admissions was also approved by the Academic Council during the course of meeting.
