DU Professor Appointed as New VC of Kashmir University

Dr Talat Ahmad has been chosen from a panel of three persons recommended by a search committee chaired by Dr Abid Hussain, former Indian Ambassador to USA


Dr Talat Ahmad, a professor at Delhi University, will take charge as the new Vice Chancellor of Kashmir University next week.

Dr Ahmad is a professor at the Department of Geology at DU and will take over from Professor Riyaz Punjabi, the present Vice Chancellor, who had completed his tenure on January 6.

Dr Ahmad has been chosen from a panel of three persons recommended by a search committee chaired by Dr Abid Hussain, former Indian ambassador to USA, in early April 2011. Governor N.N. Vohra, Chancellor, University of Kashmir, appointed Dr Ahmad as the vice chancellor of the university in consultation with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is also the Pro Chancellor of the university.

He did his Master’s in Geology from Aligarh Muslim University and then an MPhil in Ore Petrology-Geochemistry and a doctorate in Igneous Petrology-Geochemistry from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Dr Ahmad has been a Fellow at the Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Sciences. Besides this, he has also been a post doctoral fellow with three foreign universities namely University of Leicester, UK (under the Government of India Fellowship), University of Cambridge (under NERC Fellowship) and Nagoya University, Japan.
