Dr Vint Cerf, Vice President and chief Internet Evangelist at Google, and widely known as one of the Fathers of the Internet, will be honoured for his contributions at the 2011 New Media Consortium’s (NMC) Summer Conference in Madison, Wisconsin, on June 18, 2011. Cerf will become the sixth recipient of the NMC’s prestigious NMC Fellows Award.
Cerf adds the NMC Fellows Award to a list of major recognitions: honorary degrees, the National Medal of Technology, the Turing Award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and membership in the National Academy of Engineering, besides others. His contributions to the internet include the development of TCP/IP technology and a major role in the funding and formation of ICANN, which he ultimately led as chairman.
His work at Google includes predictions on how technology will impact future society, encompassing such areas as artificial intelligence, environmentalism, the advent of IPv6, and the transformation of the television industry and its delivery model.
As part of the award ceremony, Cerf will share his reflections on the implications of the billions of devices and sensor systems becoming part of the internet.
The 2011 NMC Summer Conference, hosted by the University of Wisconsin - Madison, will run June 14-18 at the Monona Terrace Convention Centre in Madison.
