The Government of India has proposed to set up five universities in different Indian cities, including one in Bangalore, for persons of Indian origin (PIO) to deepen its connectivity with the diaspora, said Didar Singh, Secretary in the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, at the recently-concluded mini Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.
The minister said that the idea was proposed two years ago and the universities will be set up under the Innovation Universities Bill introduced in the Parliament. Since these universities will focus only on innovation, the students will not have to bother about passing exams or scoring good marks.
These full-fledged universities will be built in public-private partnership and 50% of their seats will be reserved for students from Indian diaspora.
PIO universities are an addition to the many other initiatives like Know India Programme and Study India Programme that India has undertaken to connect with its diaspora, Singh added.
He also said that the universities would serve as a platform for the diaspora youth to not only connect with their roots but also acquire excellent education and professional skills.

The idea is great. But I think why not experiment with students who are Indian. They also need innovative ideas like this. If Mr. Didar Singh can read this comment, I believe examinations need a fresh look and innovation must replace the ageold stranglehold of the Macaulay system. If we want people to get rid of job-seeking mentality and want to create something of their own, this is a wonderful idea. And it must be available for indian students also.
