Himachal Pradesh to Set Up India's First Hydro Engineering College
13 April 2011

The institute will start operations in July this year. It will also run five hydro power courses

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal has laid the foundation stone of a new hydro power engineering college aiming at meeting the rising demand for engineers in hydro power projects. The college is a joint venture of National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) and Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL) that runs the country's buggest hydropower plant in the state.

A government spokesperson said the institute, named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, will initially start diploma courses from July this year.

"From the next academic year, the institute will start degree engineering courses too," he said.
It will also start five courses in Hydro Power Engineering with 300 students in each course.

"As part of corporate social responsibility, SJVNL is providing a financial assistance of Rs750 million. Initially, Rs150 million was released for the infrastructure of the institute," SJVNL’s Deputy General Manager, Vijay Verma said.
