The government will provide a one-time grant of Rs 3.34 crore to set up the unit

Giving a boost to the medical infrastructure in Punjab, Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) has given its approval to set-up a Multi-disciplinary Research Unit (MRU) at the government medical college in Amritsar.

The Centre would provide a grant of Rs 3.34 crore to fulfill the long pending demand of the medical college to extend its scope of research.

“Research scholars and postgraduate students were not able to conduct research in the area of their choice and had to go to other places. But with the establishment of MRU, latest research facilities can be provided to the students,” said Arunesh Shakir, State Medical Education and Research Minister.

He added, “Besides the grant, the centre would also provide financial support for a period of five years to engage technical manpower and running the MRU. After this, the liabilities of the technical staff and the running expenditure of the unit would be taken over by the state government.”
