IGNOU has also brought the light of education behind the high walls of Amravati Central Jail, where more than 70 inmates are undergoing various vocational programmes


Spreading its wings Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Nagpur Regional Centre has expanded its network in 45 more locations across 14 districts of the state. Already university has destinations in 11 districts of Vidarbha region and three districts of Nanded, Hingoli and Parbhani in Marathwada region.
It is offering various degree and diploma programmes beside Ph.d in more than 30 subjects. About 6000 students have enrolled themselves for the current academic year 2011-12. Regional Director Dr P Sivaswaroop said that expansion of university will benefit those who are residing in remote areas and are keen to continue their education through distance learning programmes.
University has also brought the light of education behind the high walls of Amravati Central Jail, where more than 70 inmates are undergoing various vocational programmes including carpentry, welding, bakery and dress making. According to Sivaswaroop, university is charging nothing from these students except examination fee.
