The NYCEDC will provide land and capital to IIT-B to set up the campus in New York if the proposal is selected

Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) is preparing a draft proposal to set up a new campus for applied science courses in New York.

The institute has formed a committee for the same. The proposal is likely to be sent to the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) next month.

IIT-B is among the several top institutions around the world that have received proposal from the NYCEDC for setting up the campus in New York.

According to a senior faculty at IIT-B, the institute received NYCEDC invitation three weeks back and if the proposal is selected, the NYCEDC will provide capital and land to set up the campus. However, the centre will have to sustain on its own after the primary infrastructure is developed.

NYCEDC is offering a unique opportunity to develop a premier science and research facility and campus in New York, according to its website. The last date for submitting the proposals is March 16.

With more than 626,000 students and 39 percent of global market capitalisation, New York is a business and academic capital globally.

In order to maintain a diverse and competitive economy, it seeks to strengthen its applied sciences capabilities, particularly in fields which lend themselves to commercial opportunities, the NYCEDC said.
