Indian Institute of Handloom Technology to be set up in West Bengal

The cost sharing formula between the centre and the state is yet to be finalised.


 

An Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT) Centre will be set up at Shantipur in Nadia district of West Bengal. This will be the fifth institute in the country. The IIHT plays a very vital role in the research and development (R&D), imparting training to upgrade their skills and increase productivity in the handloom sector.
State Textile Minister- Manas Bhuiyan said, “in view of the long pending demand of state, the centre has agreed to set up an Indian Institute of Handloom Technology in the state.” He said that the cost sharing formula between the centre and the state is yet to be finalised.
It may be mentioned here that the four IIHTs’ at Varanasi, Salem, Guwahati and Jodhpur conduct three years Diploma Course in Handloom Technology. The Institute at Varanasi an Salem are also conducting 1-1/2  (One and half) year duration (three semester) Post Graduate Diploma course in Textile chemistry.
