'Jamia's Minority Status a Boon for Muslim Students'
13 May 2011

The monitory status of Jamia will ensure that Muslims have better access to higher education

Granting minority status to Jamia Millia Islamia will ensure that the Muslim community has better access to higher education, Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes P.L. Punia said Thursday.

"Granting of minority status to Jamia Millia Islamia is a significant step in the direction of ensuring greater access by Muslim community to higher education in the country," Punia said after meeting Jamia's vice chancellor Najeeb Jung.

"Jamia must ensure that rights of the scheduled castes remain protected within the rubric of reservation," added Punia.

The National Commission for Minority Education Institutions (NCMEI) granted 'minority' status to the university on February 22 this year, which will enable it to reserve up to 50% seats for Muslim students.
