An Indian girl from Kolkata, has bagged the highest honour of Cambridge University. Mahima Khanna has been awarded the prestigious Stevenson Prize for her outstanding research work. She has become the third Indian to receive this award after noted economist Amaratya Sen and educationist Sir Partha Dasgupta.
Twenty three-year-old Mahima was a student of MPhil in Economic Research. She sought her specialisation in International Trade and Advanced Econometrics at the university, where she topped a class of 120. She is currently working as a consultant with a Mumbai-based company and has also served as an intern with the Planning Commission.
Mahima completed her ISC from La Martiniere College for Girls, Kolkata and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from St Xavier's College in Kolkata. She said, "My papers were related to trade liberalization and informality, based on evidence from the manufacturing sector in India. No doubt, the size of the informal sector is growing rapidly. The government should patronize it", she says.
It may be mentioned here that Nobel laureate Amaratya Sen was the first Indian to win Stevenson award in 1956. While Professor Sir Partha Sarathi Dasgupta, who also hails from Kolkata, won this award in 1967. He is a Professor of Economics at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.
