Noted academician Laxmi Narayan Bhagat has been appointed the vice-chancellor of Ranchi University. A four-member committee, constituted by the governor of Jharkhand- Syed Ahmed, had proposed his name. Bhagat was working as the director of Institute of Science and Management (ISM).

Bhagat has worked as registrar in Ranchi University from January 2003 to September 2008. He has also been a senior professor of economics from 2008 to 2010 and principal of three constituent colleges of RU from September 1994 to December 2002. Recently, he was the director at ISM Ranchi since August 2010.

The post was vacant since the end of tenure of AA Khan as VC on December 31. In a move to choose new VC, governor and chancellor of university has set up four members committee comprising Justice R K Merathia as the nominee of Chief Justice Prakash Chandra Tatia, chief secretary S K Chaudhary, principal secretary to the governor A K Pandey and ex-VC K K Nag. Committee had received around 140 applications for the post.
