MP Singh to head BIT, Sindri Board

Board will take initiative to regularize academic calendar, filling up the vacancy of teachers and other issues


 

Former Vice-Chancellor of Vinoba Bhave University – Prof MP Singh has been appointed as the chairman of the ten-member board of governors for Birsa Institute of Technology, Sindri (Jharkhand). The state government has also finalized the names of other members of the board.
Among other board members are director, science and technology department, Arun Kumar, JSPL executive director (mining and power) OP Jha, associate professor of IIT-Delhi Ashok Kumar Keshri, head of department of civil engineering, BIT-Sindri, R.P. Sharma, associate professor of chemical engineering department, Om Prakash and IIM-Raipur director BS Sahay.
The aim behind setting up governing board is to follow guidelines of University Grant Commission (UGC), which stipulates representation from various sections including industries and teachers’ fraternity in technical institution.
All the important decisions such as semi-autonomous status, regularizing academic calendar, filling up the vacancy of teachers, rechristening of bachelors of engineering courses to B Sc, Engineering, syllabus revamp, etc, would be looked after by the new governing body.
Talking about his priorities as Chairman of BIT, MP Singh said, “I will work to make the institution, which once enjoyed the status of an IIT in the unified Bihar, qualify for the World Bank-assisted Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP).’
It may be mentioned here that BIT Sindri, founded in 1949, is a premier technical institute offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various branches of engineering. The institute is funded and administered by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Jharkhand. It is academically affiliated to Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag for conducting examinations and awarding degrees.
