New IIIT to be set up in Assam

The Centre will contribute 57 per cent while the share of the state government will be 35 per cent out of the total budget of the Institute.


Assam will soon have a new Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) with world-class infrastructure on public-private mode. The institute will be set up at Guwahati, with an estimated cost of Rs 127 crore.
The proposed IIIT will be headed by the Advisor to the Prime Minister on the National Council on Skills Development, S Ramadorai. The State government has acquired 100 acres of land at Mirza, near Guwahati for the institute.
The Centre will contribute 57 per cent while the share of the state government will be 35 per cent out of the total budget of the Institute. Besides this, Tata, Oil India Limited and Assam Electronics Development Corporation will contribute the remaining amount for the project.
The classes are expected to start by August 2012.
It may be noted here that the Union Human Resources Development Ministry has deiced to establish 20 new IIITs across the country. Currently four such institutes are running at Hyderabad, Bangalore, Gandhinagar and Delhi.
