Minister for Higher Education, VS Acharya, recently announced that no universities in Karnataka will have the provision of distance education mode for technical courses saying that such degrees would not be recognised anywhere.
At the general body meeting of Karnataka State Higher Education Council, Acharya told the vice chancellors of the various institutions of the state and Higher Education Department officials that the All India Council for Technical Education does not allow any university to conduct professional courses through distance education. He added that the Supreme Court has also said that no varsity can conduct any professional course through distance education mode.
Principal Secretary for Higher Education Latha Krishna Rao said that distance education is a source of revenue and that universities should focus on teaching and research.
Acharya also said that Karnataka’s universities are also looking into setting up Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) of education for undergraduate courses and the report will soon be submitted to the department. Individual reports will also be submitted to the department to renew all courses – undergraduate and postgraduate.
A report on setting up an innovative university in Mysore is also expected to be complied very soon. This will later be sent to the Centre for grant allocation.
