They are the first institution in the country to start the concept of finishing school to bridge the gap between industry and academics. NRI Institute is very prompt in adopting new technologies. Student Tracking System, Intranet, Recycling plant are some. Innovations are also done in teaching methodologies. Among all the technologies adopted by the institute one is the use of Smart Boards / Portable Interactive Whiteboard System in classrooms.
Besides, delivering lectures through chalk and talk or Over Head Projectors, they use LCD and Smart Boards. The basic problems faced with regular boards was that once the board was clean, it could not be retrieved. Secondly, the diagrams and pictures could not be projected properly. Thirdly, it was more time consuming and unsystematic. In Over Head Projectors, only the prepared slides could be shown, but other problems remain. Hence, some technology was required in which High Quality Presentations could be done along with ease of Boards with the capability to retrieve. The choices were either to use a LCD projector along with a black / white Board or to use smart boards and a portable Whiteboard system. Knowledge of components and their usage, devices and their inner structure, cross sectional view, circuit diagrams, block diagrams, video lectures, presentation and discussions are a regular practice which was very difficult to cater to traditional methods. Hence, a technology was required where everything is present in single device. Hence, Smart Boards or the Portable Whiteboard System was the best choice.
Initially one room was exclusively dedicated to it. Afterward, when the portable interactive whiteboard system was used, it was found more handy. It could be installed anywhere with a Computer and LCD and can be displayed even on wall without a screen or on soft screen without any cable attached to the projection surface. As soon as both the instruments are attached, it becomes an interactive board in which along with a regular power point presentation one can write, erase, underline, explain on the same or separate sheet and the whole lecture could be retrieved or revised and stored. Hence, it is quick referral for future usage. This technology is easy to use but it is a bit expensive and has to be handled with proper care.
The whole institute has benefited with this. Students are able to see presentations which are more interactive, along with pre-prepared power point presentations, video lectures, etc. The faculty prepares quality lectures and are able to educate students. In case of a faculty leaving the institute, the lectures and other material remain with the institute. Copy of all the lectures are stored centrally. All the computers are connected through LAN and whole data / lectures can be viewed by Principal / Director, sitting in their offices. Hence, monitoring of lectures is done properly.
