Prof. CNR Rao of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore has been awarded the Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize for 2011. This is in recognition of his contributions to materials research.
The award is being given for the first time by the Academy of Sciences of the Developing World. The award includes a cash prize of one lakh dollars, a medal and a citation. The award recognizes Prof. Rao’s monumental contributions to the chemistry of materials for more than 50 years. Prof. Rao delivered a lecture on his research contributions after receiving this award.
Prof. Rao is currently the National Research Professor and Linus Pauling Research Professor and Honorary President of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research. He appointed Chair of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Indian Prime Minister in January 2005, a position which he had occupied earlier during 1985-89. He also worked as the director International Centre for Materials Science (ICMS).
