Union government has received a proposal to establish five medical colleges in the mining areas of different subsidiaries of Coal India Limited. The locations identified in this regard include, Talcher Ranchi, Dhanbad and Manendragharh.
The Union Coal and Statistics and Programme Implementations minister - Sriprakash Jaiswal said that these colleges are in pipeline as process of getting approval from the Medical Council of India (MCI) already started. These academic institutions would be established with an investment of Rs 60-100 crore.
It may be mentioned here that South Eastern Coalfields (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), is already operating engineering college in partnership with the Chhattisgarh government near Raipur. CIL is also running an Industrial Training Centre at Bolpur in West Bengal in a tie-up with Damodar Valley Corporation and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, where the total investment is Rs 23 crore.
