Pune varsity introduces Human Rights course

University of Pune (UOP) has introduced a compulsory course of Human Rights and Duties in its all streams. The initiative was taken following a state government directive to make human right course mandatory in curriculum.
The director of Board of College and University Development- Vasudeo Gade said, “University of Pune will be the first university in the country which has introduced one paper of human right in its course. The aim behind starting the course is to create awareness about human rights in students' community.”
He informed that under the move, at least 15 lectures will be delivered in each semester. According to plan, the course would be introduced in post-graduate courses in initial phase. But, later it will be implemented in undergraduate level programmes.
As per the format drawn, every student will appear for one paper of the Human Rights course each semester and will have to get through it along with the regular subjects. The University Grants Commission ( UGC) has also recommended the Human Rights studies in its basic guidelines and the subject is treated as an optional one in other states.
