Punjab to Set up 13 Institutes on Lines of IITs, IIMs

Punjab will soon set up 13 institutes on the lines of Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Management to strengthen its education sector.

Punjab Technical University (PTU) will invest Rs 1,000 crore in setting up these institutes which would offer six-year integrated undergraduate and post-graduate courses.

“Punjab Institute of Technology (PIT) and Punjab Institute of Management are being set up on the university campus and will offer MTech, MBA and PhD courses,” said Rajneesh Arora, Vice Chancellor, Punjab Technical University.

“There will also be 10 PITs throughout the state, having 250 students each from class XI onwards. Admissions will be given on merit.”

The institutes will have their own board of managements and will have the autonomy to design their syllabus and conduct exams. The director and faculty will be salaried at par with their counterparts at IITs and IIMs, Arora added.

PTU is also upgrading its existing polytechnics so that these courses are offered in state-of-the-art infrastructure. The admissions to these institutes shall start from June this year.
