University Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned Rs 50 lakh to Punjab University (PU) to make its entire campus Wi-Fi. PU authorities have set a deadline of five-months to equip its campus, which is spread over 550 acres, under Wi-Fi network.
Internet access points will be set up in all the academic and administration block, student centre and hostels. Users will be able to access the network within a radius of 100 meters from each access point.
University’s Computer Center Director K Tankeshwar said, “Our aim is to set-up a secure and controllable Wi-Fi network and we have studied the programming of other big universities and technical colleges that have similar on-campus facility. We have installed firewalls to ensure the security and have imposed a ban on the browsing of porn and crime-related sites.”
Over 13000 students study at sprawling PU campus, which is spread over sectors 14 and 25. Currently only few departments and hostels have Wi-Fi connectivity.
