UGC would identify few more universities and support them to improve their academic infrastructure and research facilities

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned Rs 50 Crores to University of Pune under the second phase of UPE (University with Potential for Excellence) programme.
Acting vice-chancellor of University of Pune (UoP) Sanjay Chahande said, “The sanction letter of UGC reached UoP recently. Under phase II, the maximum fund that can be given is Rs 25 crore which has already been disbursed. However, UGC officials were so pleased with the presentation and have agreed in principle to sanction Rs 25 crore later.''
It may be mentioned here that the UGC initiated this approach in five universities including Jawaharlal Nehru University, Hyderabad University, Madras University, Pune University and Jadavpur University in its IX Plan period. It would like to identify a few more universities and support them during the X Plan to improve their academic infrastructure and research facilities.
The aim of the initiative is to make these Indian universities comparable to the world class universities by enabling them “to adapt to modern  methods of teaching and learning, developing learner-friendly lecture materials, changing their evaluation methods and striving for excellence, to sustain themselves in this competitive world”.
