The Mumbai police have detained around 30 activists of the Yuva Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) after they created a ruckus in Chinai College, an official said.
The Yuva Sena, headed by Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray's grandson, Aditya, and MNS, headed by Thackeray's nephew Raj Thackeray, were protesting the decision of the college management that debarred 119 students from appearing for internal examinations for lack of sufficient attendance.
The protesting activists, including Shiv Sena legislator Abhijit Adsul, trooped inside the college premises at Andheri East and started throwing around papers, furniture and fittings, prompting the college to summon the police.
Several affected BCom students raised slogans against the college management and alleged that they were being victimised as the college wanted to sell off the prime piece of land for a shopping mall and hence trying to reduce the number of students.
The college said it was awaiting the report of a three-member enquiry committee of academicians, S.T. Gadade, Chaitali Chakraborti and Suhasini Sant, which has been submitted to the University of Mumbai.
According to the rules, students who record attendance below 50 percent are not eligible to write examination, and the affected students, some who had zero attendance, were earlier suspended by the Chinai College’s management.
