Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh on Tuesday inaugurated the 99th Annual Session of the Indian Science Congress at Bhubaneswar. Dozens of noted scientists and speakers across the country and 15 Nobel Laureates are participating in five-day event.
Inaugurating the congress, PM Dr Singh said, "Over the past few decades, India's relative position in the world of science had been declining and we have been overtaken by countries like China." He added, "Things are changing, but we cannot be satisfied with what has been achieved. We need to do much more to change the face of Indian science. We must strengthen the supply chain of the science sector.”
More than 15,000 delegates, including scientists and students, are participating in the Jan 3-7 event being held at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT University). The theme of the conference is "Science and Technology for Inclusive Innovation - Role of Women".
On the occasion, the Governor of Odisha, MC Bhandare, the Union Minister of Science and Technology, Vilasrao Deshmukh, the Minister of State for Science and Technology, Ashwani Kumar and General President of 99th Indian Science Congress, Dr. Geetha Bali were present. An Exhibition of scientific innovations and models was also organized. This was the third time that Odisha hosted Science Congress.
