Sibal, Hillary to address US-India Higher Education Summit

The summit will be jointly hosted by the Governments of India and the United States at Washington DC on October 13


Union Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will address a US-India Higher Education Summit at Washington DC on October 13.

The summit will be jointly hosted by the Governments of India and the United States. Higher education leaders and government officials from the US and India, as well as private sector leaders will participate in the summit.

The objective of the summit is to further strengthen higher education collaboration and exchange between institutions in the US and India through exploration of topics of mutual interest such as joint degrees, research partnerships, accreditation and quality assurance. In addition, it will highlight the importance of education as a pillar of the US-India Strategic Dialogue and set forth goals for deepening this aspect of our bilateral relationship in co-operation with the many excellent institutions of higher education in both countries.

It will also feature a roundtable discussion on US-India Higher Education Co-operation, co-chaired by senior officials from the US and Indian governments. Prominent higher education and thought leaders will speak at a plenary session and in breakout sessions on topics crucial to expanding and strengthening higher education collaboration between the two countries.

Both the countries have been co-operation in the higher education sector since 2009 but haven’t been able to develop a single vision of their co-operation in the sector. The development of this vision is critical the success of this summit.

Sibal will speak at the opening of the summit, being hosted by the US-India Business Council at Georgetown University, said the US Department of State.

Indian Ambassador to the US Nirupama Rao and former US Ambassador to India and President Emeritus of Colorado College Richard Celeste will speak at a working lunch.

US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Kapil Sibal will deliver the closing remarks.

On October 12, Deputy Secretary of State William Burns and Kapil Sibal will speak at a reception ahead of the Summit.
