Tamil Nadu based SRM University has opened its first overseas branch in the capital of Sri Lanka. An international level campus is being set up for the students of university.
A co-educational private university- SRM (standing for "Sri Ramaswamy Memorial University") has five campuses in Tamil Nadu, one in Uttar Pradesh and Sri Lanka. Previously functioning under Anna University as SRM Engineering College, the institute gained deemed status in 2003-04, and was later renamed as SRM University.
In 2006, The deemed university attained the status of a full-fledged university, under section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. It is consistently ranked among India's top engineering colleges and private universities.
The Lankan government is encouraging international universities in the country to transform knowledge. It has also assured that 20 per cent seats of the international universities to be set up here would be reserved for local students.
