State Universities Need More Funds: Ansari
21 December 2010

The economic growth rate of 9 percent of GDP cannot be maintained without doubling the enrolment in higher education

Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari Monday said that higher education cannot improve in India unless state universities are able to obtain more funds, create new infrastructure and enrich their existing academic programmes.

"Higher education cannot improve in India unless state universities, which are the backbone and represent the bulk of enrolment, are able to obtain greater funds, create new infrastructure and enrich their existing academic programmes," Ansari said at the Foundation Day Lecture 2010 of the University of Calcutta.

Even though we have been able to achieve an economic growth rate of 9 percent of the GDP despite low enrolment in higher education, it would not be possible for us to sustain such an economic growth, maintain our competitiveness and enhance our productivity without at least doubling our higher education enrolment, he said.

"We must create avenues for vocational education so that entering universities does not become a default choice for the sake of employment," said Ansari.

It is agreed that primary education is important but why everyone wants to enroll the children in private schools by paying high fees? serious thought is required to be given since there are plenty of Governmet schools giving almost free education. The question is how to improve the quality of education in these schools. Governments hould take some steps to ensure the quality in its own school so that the common man is benefitted.

We are talking too much about the higher education. Everywhere at State-levels, University-levels, Institution-levels seminars, workshops and top level meetings and meetings are being held and crores and being spent in the name of higher education. It is a matter of pity that nobody is talking about primary education. Most of the private institutes in India are taking admission fee of Rs.50000/- and above unlimited - not naming as donation - for admission to Nursery/Kg. The rich are only able to pay such high amounts and get admission. Where the poor wanting to educate their children in good schools will go. Who empowered these institutes to charge such high amounts for admission and run schools in the land of India. Something more important and needing seriousness from all the levels including Government and its bodies to look after the primary education in our country with more than 40% population living below poverty line and no one to take care.
