Teachers to get Laptops in Mangalore University

In a bid to equip staff with information technology, Mangalore University has decided to provide laptops to its 160 teachers. The aim behind this initiative is to encourage them to use it for research and academic activities.
According to reports, the university has also allocated separate funds in its 2011-12 budget. In the first phase, 160 teachers would benefit with this initiative. About 101 teachers would be provided with high-speed internet facility at their residential quarters on the campus.
The Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University TC Shivashankara Murthy said Union Department of Science and Technology had recently ranked Mangalore University 18th among the 50 top universities in the country. The department had conducted a study on its own to rank the universities in terms of research and other activities.
Based on this, Murthy said, the department had sanctioned the university Rs. 9 crore for strengthening science infrastructure in three years. It had released Rs. 3 crore now. The University Grants Commission had sanctioned Rs. 2 crore for developing information, communication, and technology facilities. He added that the university would also install 30 more computers in its cyber laboratory at the library for the benefit of students, research scholars, and teachers within a month.
