The first technical university exclusively for women will come up in Delhi. It was decided that the existing Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology, which comes under the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, will be upgraded to form the university.
The decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister of Delhi-  Sheila Dixit. After the meeting, CM said, “To focus on participation of women engineers in nation-building and encouraging technical education among women, Women's Technical University will be set up in the capital."
She said that the national capital would be the first 'state' to have an exclusive technical university for women. It is proposed to be a non-affiliating university, aimed at ensuring an environment for excellence in engineering education and active participation of women in engineering, science and technology.
