A day after the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) administration announced the varsity's sine die closure following violence among students, the campus was peaceful and students were slowly returning home, an official said Sunday.

On Friday, there were three rounds of violence between armed groups of students. No one was injured.

Following the violence linked to the university's internal politics, the district authorities advised the AMU registrar and the proctor to close the university.

Of the eight students hurt in the free-for-all Friday night, five were discharged Saturday while two - Adil and Obaidullah - were still undergoing treatment at the Medical College hospital. Their condition was stable, the official said.

He said 40% of the students had vacated their hostels till Sunday. In the notice issued on Saturday, students had been asked to vacate their hostels within 48 hours.

No incident of violence had been reported so far after the closure of the university and the campus is totally calm and peaceful, the official said.

The university administration has asked the railways for two special boggies in all the trains passing through Aligarh to eastern Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Delhi as well as ten special trains covering all these destinations. Similarly, Uttar Pradesh Roadways has also been requested to provide buses to facilitate the students' return to their homes.

Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis, who is presently in Kerala, is returning Monday afternoon. "A decision on the date for reopening of the university and the colleges will be taken only after a comprehensive review of the volatile situation," an official indicated.
