A virtual institute for applied mathematics will soon come up in IT hub- Bangalore for research works. In this connection, the Department of Science & Technology and the National Centre of Scientific Research (CNRS) of France have signed an agreement.
Under this agreement, six institutes from India, led by Indian Institute of Science (IISc)- Bangalore, will participate in the project. Besides IISc, Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) and the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai and a couple of IITs will also be involved in the initiative. On the other hand, the University of Toulouse will lead institute from France.
CNRS's Director General- Joel Bertrand said, "We have decided to set up virtual institute on mathematics in Bangalore. Along with this, two international associated labs in informatics and immunology will also be established to strengthen scientific collaboration between the two nations."
It has been decided that each side will invest Rs 5 crore towards the initiative. The funds would be spent over the next four years on joint research projects in mathematical sciences. In initial phase, 30 Indian and 30 French mathematicians will jointly work on research projects at IISc in Bangalore and CNRS Centres in Paris and Toulouse in France.
National Centre of Scientific Research (CNRS), France is deeply involved in carrying out research in all areas of science, technology and society through its ten institutes, three of which have the status of national institutes.
