President approves Annamalai University Bill

The Annamalai University Bill 2013 that will give the State government full control of the University has been launched with approval from President Pranab Mukherjee

The Annamalai University Bill 2013 has been launched with acquiesce from the President Pranab Mukherjee. This bill will now allow the State government to take full control of Annamalai University. The news was relayed to present media by R.Udaichandran and S.Mathiyalagan, coordinator and general secretary respectively of the Joint Action Council (JAC) of the Annamalai University Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff Associations.

Joint Action Council office-bearers also made a statement on Wednesday, stating that the bill was sent to the President for approval after the Bill was moved in the Assembly on April 16. the State government has been informed about the Presidents approval and will notify the public in its its gazette. The bill will free the university from the influence of the family of founder Rajah Sir Annamanali Chettiar.

Teaching and non-teaching staff of the university welcomed the news, gathering in large numbers on the university premises. They exulted in the decision and distributed sweets and burst crackers.

Mr. Mathiyalagan informed the present media that this was a move that had been desired since 1981. In the past years Annamalai University had lost much of its financial stability with the erstwhile management thinking of retrenching staff and cutting salaries. The proposal to put in effect financial fail safes created a series of agitations. Shiv Das Meena has been appointed as Administrator to update the affairs of the university
