The Women’s Studies Research Centre of the Gauhati University will introduce a master’s course on women studies and a certificate course on gender studies. The certificate course will start from the first week of June and a master’s course in women’s studies to be started from August.
The certificate course with 15 intake capacity is divided into three levels and is aimed at graduates, homemakers, NGOs and government workers. The course aims to sensitise women-related issues among people.
Officials of the centre said the two courses is being launched keeping in mind the fact that gender sensitivity today is an indispensable attribute. “The first level of the course would focus on gender sensitisation in a three-day programme dealing with fundamental issues related to gender. It will cover gender concepts relevant in day to day activities, gender awareness, gender roles and needs, gender-related myths, gender neutral language and gender division of labour,” the official said.
The second and third levels will deal with more advanced gender issues. Certificates will be awarded after completion of each level while students who complete all the three levels will be awarded post-graduate certificate degree in gender studies.
The Women’s Studies Research Centre is a UGC-sponsored research hub under Gauhati University Established in 1989, the centre aims to create awareness on women’s issues, assess women’s contribution to the social processes, find out women’s own perception of their lives and the broader social reality and their struggles and aspirations.
