5 apps that can help you become a more effective teacher

EDU, identifies 5 apps that are being used by academicians world over to make work simpler, faster and easier

When was it launched

The app was launched in 2010.

About the app

TED's official app presents talks from some of the world's most fascinating people: education radicals, tech geniuses, medical mavericks, business gurus and more. Also there are new offerings being added each day—featuring lectures on topics ranging from feminism to biology, education to poverty, and creativity to so much more.

Version 2.0 of this app clearly intends to reach the widest-possible audience. The videos are available with more than 90 languages offered as subtitle options, and the menu can be browsed in a user’s preferred language. Most—but not all—of the lectures are in English, but the app’s developers hope language won’t be a barrier to the exchange of ideas that the Ted lectures are meant to facilitate in the first place. The latest version of the app offers faster and shorter downloads than previous versions of Ted.

How it can help you

1. Abundant relevant content: This app provides you with a collection of more than 1700 TEDTalk videos and audios (with more added each week) on the official TED app which can be accessed on tablets and smart phones.

2. Make classes more interesting and interactive: It can help one make routine classroom drills more interesting by using a video lecture on a topic by an eminent personality in that field -with the smart phone being a device which almost every other student possesses in India

3. USP: The videos are available in fully translated versions and localized in 22 languages Ted’s length of content might be one of the only drawbacks of the app.

When was it launched

GroupMe was founded by Jared Hecht and Steve Martocci in the Summer of 2010, inspired by a project conceived at the TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon. GroupMe was acquired by Skype in August 2011.

About the app

GroupMe is the best way to chat with everyone you know. It's absolutely free, whether you're talking to a group of people, or texting with one person. Best of all, it works on nearly every phone, via push or SMS. With today's generation's ever growing need of communicating at all times, using apps like these may help bridge the gap between teachers and students.

How it can help you

1. Free group messaging: It's like a private chat room for small groups. You can create as many chats as you want, and it's all free.

2. Compatible with most devices: With native apps for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone, you can chat with students from your phone on the go, on your computer at the office, and on your tablet.

3. Added advantage: It even works over SMS. You don't need to have the app to use GroupMe. Add anyone from your phone book and they will immediately be able to chat with the group. You can chat with your groups directly over SMS.
